What is Pediatric Ophtalmology?

Paediatric ophthalmology is the field of ophthalmology that deals with eye diseases in children, from the birth to the adulthood.

The aim is to support the development of visual function and to ensure that it runs smoothly. It is important that any problem caused by genetic anomalies or predispositions, congenital malformations, childhood diseases, trauma or refractive disorders is dectected as early as possible.

In fact, the challenge with children is twofold: on the one hand, the pathology causing the disorder must be treated and, on the other, it must be ensured that it does not cause a delay in the maturation of the visual organs.

When to consult?

Paediatricians and general practitioners carry out some of the screening and refer patients to ophthalmologists in case of doubt.

Increased vigilance is required in the case of a family history of strabismus or eye disease with the parents as well as in the case of severe refractive anomalies or prematurity.

The screening should be carried out by the paediatrician or by the general practitioner around the age of one and again before starting school. Thereafter, school screening may take over and older children may be better able to express their symptoms.

It is important that parents seek early advice, for example, in the event of abnormal or unstable eye position ,if an eyelid that completely covers the eye, in case of irritated and watery eyes with a localized infection, or in case of an abnormal whitish reflection of the pupil or intense headaches.

Pediatric Ophtalmology in a few steps

An initial consultation allows us to perform the necessary examinations and make a diagnosis.

We welcome you in our ophthalmology clinic and we carry out a pre-consultation to better understand your child’s needs. This consists of understanding the reason for the consultation and your child’s medical history.

The opthalmologist examines the child who is sometimes also seen by the orthoptist. An additional examination with pupil dilatation is often made to determine the optical defect and decide on the treatment.

A follow-up, sometimes close, has to be considered if necessary, over several months to accompany the child towards the acquisition of normal vision.
