What is strabismus?
Strabismus is a disorder related to the non-parallelism of the eyes. Its symptoms and consequences are very different depending on the age of onset of the strabismus.
A deviation of the parallelism of the eyes that appears before the age of eight hinders the proper development of the visual function and can lead to lasting and irreversible consequences.
With adults, neurological diseases can cause the disorder and must be diagnosed.
The search for the causes of strabismus is essential, especially in cases of sudden onset.
Ocular parallelism depends on good optical correction, which is the first therapeutic measure to be considered.
Treatment of strabismus
The evaluation of strabismus is carried out by the orthoptist in collaboration with the ophthalmologist.
The treatment of strabismus sometimes only requires regular monitoring and the wearing of glasses with possibly corrective prisms.
Surgery may be proposed when the situation is stable, the measurements reproducible and if an improvement is likely.
A preoperative assessment is necessary, sometimes with several orthoptic sessions.
The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia and, most of the time, on an outpatient basis. This is a microsurgery technique.
Regular post-operative follow-up is necessary, especially for children by whom the loss of ocular parallelism may have consequences for long-term vision.
