Cataract surgery

What is a cataract?

A cataract is a progressive opacification of the crystalline lens, which is the lens located inside the eye. This lens focuses the light on the retina. An anatomical alteration of the crystalline lens can therefore lead to a feeling of glare, a hazy impression in front of the eyes, double vision or a duller perception of colors.

Cataracts are the most common cause of decreased vision after the age of 50, but they can occur at any age. It is therefore essential to consult a doctor as soon as any of the symptoms appear.

The causes of cataracts are numerous and can be very varied. In most cases, it is due to the aging process of the eye. It can also be related to long-term medication, diabetes, severe inflammation of the eye, shock or trauma, or various genetic causes.

How does it work?

Cataract surgery involves replacing the lens with an artificial lens that is gently placed inside the eye.

Specifically, the clouded lens is aspirated through a thin incision in the cornea after being emulsified. A transparent artificial lens is then injected into the eye. This lens allows vision to be restored and, eventually, various refractive errors such as myopia, astigmatism or hyperopia to be corrected.

Today, there are different types of implants that can, for some of them, allow the patient to do without glasses after the operation.

Laser cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and the results show an excellent success rate. In fact, it is the most frequently performed surgical procedure in the world, all medical specialties combined.
